Five Ways to Engage Your Class Today

1. Stage your room!  Hook your students into your curriculum by staging your room in a different way.  That could be rearranging desks into tables to form small socratic seminars.  Draping curtains on your windows to create a certain mood.  The sky’s the limit!

2. Build movement into your lesson every day!  It could be a simple brain break or create partners across the room in which they must collaborate with, and then return to their seats.  Gallery Walks, Carousel, Silent Debates on paper!  There are a plethora of ways to build movement into your classroom.

3. Props!  What prop can you bring in that will up your engagement today?  The Talking Fake Candle of Power?  That dollar tree skeleton hand?  That squishy football you throw around your room when you ask kids to answer a question?

4. Greet your kids at the door by name every day.  Education research says your classroom engagement goes up by 30 percent just by greeting kids at the door.  Now that is just plain easy wins!

5. Gamification!  What can you gamify to up your engagement?  Family Feud style?  Jeopardy.  Kahoot.  GimKit.  Blooket.  Scattergories.  The options are limitless.

Hiding under my desk

The shooting in Uvalde has me crying at all times one week after my school let out for the summer.  Someone calls me to chat about a craft fair this weekend, and I want to shout at them!  “We cannot just go on with life!”  I feel helpless and hopeless.  I spoke with one of my besties, Erin.  She said, “hey author, why don’t you write about it, and listen to Glennon Doyle’s podcast.”  Erin is in my podsquad.   Love you, girl. Out came “While I Hide Under My Desk.”  I also plan to join Moms Demand action and start advocating for policy change.

Hiding under a desk

Faces all amess

Tears stream

With one shot, gone, are our dreams

Hiding under a desk

The Gun Lobbyists make more money

We wish it was a joke, but this shit ain’t funny

My teacher sobs with a heaving chest

We all hide under our desks

Laws locked

Pleas blocked

Mothers flock

To see if it was her baby this time

The real crime

Are the deaf ears

While Gun Lobbyists make millions

The NRA contributes trillions

To the politicians who stuff their pockets

While I hide under my desk

More guns are not the answer

Assault rifles are a deadly cancer

But we can’t pass a law

America’s most deadly flaw

No background checks

I continue to hide under my desk

No red flag legislation

Society just yells about inflation

Moms demand action

Another gun transaction

And I hide under my desk

Look at the stats

Those are the facts

America, the only nation

Continuing to live in this damnation

It can be stopped

Society can adopt

Laws and change

Instead, our schools are the firing range

While I hide under my desk
